Spring 2002 Facade Grants
Downtown Improvements
Use of grant funds is limited to the exterior, specifically the facade (street elevation) of the building. There is also a maximum award per category (for example: signs $300) and no reimbursement may exceed 50%. To give a greater understanding of the nature of this incentive, the scope of the projects below indicates the grant contribution to the specific project as well as an estimate of the project total and overall scope.

project: facade refurbishment, paint, signs, lighting ($10,500) scope: rehabilitation of the basement of building to expand existing law practice and remain downtown ($70,000)
- Gary & Christie Hudson ~ E. Jefferson Street ~ $5,000
project: recapture original storefront, paint, new business entrances ($21,000) scope: adaptive reuse of the Harris Furniture building for personal residence (upstairs), retail shop, haute couture boutique, and artist studio ($340,000)
- Michelle Bechtell & Edward Fritizie ~ W. Jefferson Street ~ 2,400
project: facade refurbishment, restore historic windows, signs ($4,900) scope: adaptive use of the Madisonian newspaper building as personal residence (upstairs) and art gallery ($120,000)
- Travis & Tracey Stewart ~ E. Washington Street ~ $1,145
project: awnings and signs ($2,500) scope: baseline conversion of a previous auto-body shop as an incubator for Madison's new bakery, Kumquat Mae ($40,000)
- Lambert & Reitman ~ W. Washington Street ~ $5,000
project: restoration of historic storefront ($46,000) scope: restoration of Bank of Madison building 1920s facade recaptured from beneath a 1960s slipcover and accentuated by the locating the original Ludowicci architectural tile ($50,000)
